HTC EVO 3D and LG Optimus 3D hands on
First impressions are what counts in a lot of ways with phones and both the HTC phone deals and the LG don’t offer much in the way of positives in this area. The phones are both quite large and thick and when put beside a small phone like the Sony Xperia Arc, seem twice its size.
Both devices look quite similar, the HTC looks like a bland HTC with a bronze bar on the back to try brighten it up, though it just looks a bit distasteful. The LG has a single chrome bar across its back and looks a little better, but the rubber feel of the phone’s rear is not so inspiring.
Both of the phones have dual core chips inside and both are reasonably fast, but are still nothing invigorating and are a patch slower than their 2D contemporise. This takes the shine and enjoyment off both phones. The HTC even has a far less bright screen than the Sensation we played with recently and you just conclude that these phones are expected to be popular because of their 3D capabilities and not their other attributes.
The LG and the HTC alike have 480x800p screens that are both nice and large at 4.3inches. Though as we said about the HTC, the LG‘s display is a visible stretch away from that of the wonderful Nova screen seen on some of the other LGs. This is a little disappointing and things get worse when you consider LG is using Android 2.2 in a £500 plus phone.
There is nothing wrong with LG using this Android version in a older or less expensive phone, but you would expect it to use a new version of Android phone deals in a phone such as the Optimus 3D. They have added some nice social network apps and some other nice touches, though this may leave some people with a sour taste after they fork out. The HTC fares better and has Android 2.3 and Sense 3.0 to show for its price tag.
Both phones offer dual 5mp cameras capable of 720p shooting in 3D and still 3D images as well as 2D equivalents. The LG performs better here thanks to its better screen and also due to the fact it shows 3D stills in 3mp instead of the 2mp the HTC manages to show them in.
Overall the two phones have some strong points, but more negative points. If we were to recommend one, we would go for the LG which feels less off the pace than the HTC.
